February brought a lot of excitement in Grade 1!
In Social Studies, we explored the question, “how have changes over time affected our families and influenced how our families and communities are today?” We were fortunate to be able to go on a field trip to visit The Confluence historic site, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet.
We were able to celebrate the lands at The Confluence and the diversity of people who have resided in this area. Students built a 3D map of the area we now call Calgary to learn how the land has been used to sustain life of the Indigenous Peoples and how it has now been changed to support how we live today. Students gained hands-on experience as they handled and identified artifacts from the diverse groups of people who called this area home! We also had an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the land we were visiting and the communities that have called this area home. Students discovered how natural materials were used in the past to meet people's needs and compare how they are met today. Students worked cooperatively to build a child-sized Métis cabin! They continued their exploration by walking to The Confluence (Mohkinstsis) and then entering the oldest building in Calgary, a Métis cabin!
