Kenneth D. Taylor School – Digital Citizenship Plan

This plan is one component of the CBE Digital Citizenship Process. Schools must complete this plan:
• to be compliant with Administrative Regulation 1062 Use of Electronic Resources
• to allow students to connect to the school’s wireless network with their own devices.

Kenneth D. Taylor is a Kindergarten to grade 4 school with two EES classes. 

1) Long Term Goal

Digital Safety: Students can manage and protect their digital identity and online presence.

Outcome

  • Logging in and logging out
  • Keeping passwords private
  • Choosing good passwords
  • Protecting personal information
  • Being aware of their digital presence/footprint

Strategies

  • Class discussions 
  • Hands on practice
  • Websites (Media Smarts, netsmartz, webonauts, PBS kids, learninglab)
  • review expectations of CBE digital citizenship
  • Home discussions: Students showing parents websites and playing with family. School provides discussion
  • questions for family around digital safety

Measures

  • Students are able to log in and log out independently
  • Students do not give out their passwords or ask their classmates not to reveal their password
  • Students ask to reset passwords if someone learns it
  • Students question/double check if information reveals anything personal before they post it 
  • Students will go to an adult if a page if they go to a page online that is unsafe or questionable

Digital Learning: Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the relevance to specific learning

Outcome

  • Recognize, identify, and articulate how technology tools are available and helpful to my learning environment
  • Practice strategies for validating digital information
  • Practice problem solving and troubleshooting strategies when I am engaging with a new tool, device and/or application with teacher's support 
  • Share my knowledge and use of technology tools for learning with others in support of their growth and understanding


Strategies

  • Through integrated work, students will be asked to evaluate sites, information, and analyze the validity of sites.
  • Through integrated work, students will learn to problem solve and troubleshoot.
  • Students will have opportunities to share their new learning with peers when they have similar problems.

Measures

  • Students will find sources of information that are valid and effective for their learning
  • Students will ask for help from their peers more often

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.

Personal Mobile Devices

Student personal mobile devices are limited or restricted at all schools, unless required for health or medical needs, to support specialized learning needs, and for educational purposes. Learn more about our BYOD (bring your own device) rules.

Web Filtering & Social Media

Inappropriate or unsafe content may be blocked to provide a safe environment: some content is blocked for all users, and other content may be suitable for older students but not for younger ones. Student access to known social media platforms is blocked on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
